What Makes Iyengar Yoga Different — And Why It's Worth Trying

By Najeeb Sayeed· 5 May 2026 · 2 min read

Most people who walk into an Iyengar yoga class for the first time expect it to feel like the yoga they've seen online — flowing sequences, music, constant movement. What they find instead is slower, more deliberate, and — once they understand what's happening — considerably more powerful.

My name is Najeeb Sayeed. I have been practising and teaching Iyengar yoga for over 30 years. I joined Olistic Studios because I believe that Matunga deserves access to a form of yoga that has largely been confined to specialist centres in other parts of the city. Here is how I would explain what makes Iyengar different.

The Iyengar Approach: Alignment Above Everything

B.K.S. Iyengar was one of the world's foremost yoga masters, and the method that bears his name is built on one governing principle: precise anatomical alignment in every posture. This sounds simple. In practice, it is a lifetime's work.

When a joint is correctly aligned, muscles engage the way they are designed to. When alignment is off — even slightly — other structures compensate. Over time, those compensations become habitual and then become pain. Iyengar yoga, taught properly, unwinds those compensations systematically.

Props as Intelligence, Not Assistance

Iyengar yoga uses props — blocks, bolsters, belts, chairs — more extensively than any other style. To outsiders, this can look like a concession to weakness. It is precisely the opposite.

A block under the hand allows correct spinal alignment in a standing forward fold that flexibility doesn't yet permit. A belt around the feet in a seated pose allows the back to lengthen correctly before the hamstrings have opened. The prop is a tool for precision.

> In Iyengar yoga, a beginner and an advanced practitioner may hold the same posture. But what's happening inside each body — the attention, the refinement — is vastly different.

Who Benefits Most

Iyengar yoga is particularly well-suited to:

  • People recovering from injury or managing chronic pain
  • Beginners who want to build a genuine practice rather than just follow a flow
  • People who have tried other styles and felt something was missing
  • Those dealing with back pain, shoulder issues, or knee problems
  • Anyone interested in the deeper philosophy and precision of yoga as a discipline

What Our Classes at Olistic Look Like

Classes are small and unhurried. We move through a considered set of postures, and I give verbal and hands-on adjustments throughout. We don't rush through sequences too quickly to observe what is happening in the room. Beginners are always welcome. A trial class costs ₹650.
